Linton Lock to York

Today we travelled down the Ouse to York. As we have Dom aboard, we are planning to spend a couple of days in York so he can enjoy some of the sights. We travelled in style with John and Dom sharing the helm! (but not concurrently - Ed.)

We left our mooring which was amongst the foam created by the rushing water over the weir and salmon leap, and turned to get water at the floating pontoon beyond. The shafts of the pontoon are plenty long enough to accommodate the river in flood!

The run down to York is pretty short and soon we were on the outskirts. Skelton Rail Bridge is about to have a "make over" and the scaffolding is going up. It was a little confusing as we approached, as the right arch had a no entry sign and the lights were red.

Apparently it is to be one-way working with priority given to boats going downstream and boaters are advised to follow the "traffic lights". It is a good job we ignored the lights as we might still be there!

Dom was on the helm when a large barge and one of York Boats trip boats passed us. He has taken to steering very well so was not fazed by them or the wash.

Scarborough Rail Bridge heralded the visitor moorings in York and we moored up nearer to Lendal Bridge than we did last time. There were also a few more boats moored up - both cruisers and narrowboats.

Once moored up it was time for a quick rest and then Dom and I caught the tour bus to the Castle Museum, which is housed in the old York debtors prison.

So tomorrow we have a busy day - or at least John and Dom have! I am letting them do the Rail Museum and the Dungeons and I shall have a rest!
