Great Bedwyn to Hungerford

4.61 miles, 4 hours 16 minutes, 9 locks, 1 swing bridge, 3.19 lock/mph

We went to the 9.30 service at Great Bedwyn Church this morning (St Mary's). By the time we were ready to wander up there the morning mist had cleared and it was warm and humid.     Click on camera for Great Bedwyn photos.

Once we got back to Epiphany we set off towards Hungerford. The locks varied in difficulty and John did most of them. However lock 71, Picketfield lock,  which I chose to do was probably the most diffficult - trust muggins to chose that one! The gates were very heavy and the bottom gate leaked as fast as the water came in through the top paddles!

Cobblers lock (72) is a pretty lock and we noted that Hungerford marina between the two locks is still not showing any sign of being developed and the land is now very overgrown.

Hungerford Marsh is common land, water meadows and pasture and I managed to get a photo of one of the fisher "men".

As we approached Hungerford Church swing bridge the landing was obstructed by a BW pod. Obviously the message from Robin Evans about not obstructing landings had not reached here!

Fortunately another boat had arrived from the other side and were already arriving to open the bridge.

We are now moored above Hungerford lock - a quieter mooring than below as it is away from the traffic crossing Hungerford Town Bridge.
