The Journey really begins - Pewsey to Crofton

8.01 miles, 6 hours 29 minutes, 10 locks, 2.78 lock miles/hr

We started today with a "Boater's Breakfast" at the The Waterfront Bistro. John had a Stonehenge (the works, black pudding, fried egg, fried bread, sausage, bacon, mushroom, beans, tomato and bubble and squeak) and I had an Avebury (bacon, egg, fried bread, sausage, tomato and beans) - really good and set us up for the rest of the day. So much so that neither of us wanted anything to eat until about 4pm

It was sad to say goodbye but it has been really good to get to know Dave (nb Summer), Carl and Chilli (a beautiful dog), Nick, Pat and Nick, Penny, Tonni and of course Heidi (the chef at the Bistro), Graham and Jane and all the other Waterfront regulars.

It has been overcast but really warm (27 degrees) and we are now moored just before lock 61 at Crofton. Nb Beau (Trevor and his collie Bill) came through the locks ahead of us and are moored a little way behind us.

We were a Bruce Trust sandwich from Heathey Close lock (52) as Diana was in front and Hannah was behind, both making for Great Bedwyn for tonight. This slowed us down a bit and for the first time we queued for the locks. Surprised BW hadn't fixed the towpath side top paddle on lock 60. The leaks in the bottom gates make it a real struggle to open the top gates.

BW have pasted these notices on all the locks - I wonder if they wil prevent Hang ups? Which way is 'forward'?

So now for a peaceful evening, despite the occasional train.
