Pewsey, a pleasant walk

This afternoon we decided we needed some exercise We also needed some milk and a few other things to top the larder up. So getting into practice for the absence of a car we set off for Pewsey and the Co Op.

We walked along the towpath to Pains Bridge 113. Passing the 48 hour moorings we remarked on the lack of boats moored up. It has been like this for about 3 weekends now - plenty of room to moor, giving the lie to those who have criticised Pewsey for lack of space and long term moorers on visitor moorings.

The "14 day" moorings were also comparatively empty. So I think I can redress the grumbles that have been in the boating press recently. It was just bad luck that those boaters could not find anywhere to moor and bad timing too!

This is the busiest 2 weeks of the year, lots of boats passing us and yet - you CAN moor on the Kennet and Avon canal. It is still worth a visit!

We continued on our walk, turning off the towpath immediately after Pains Bridge onto a well beaten path away from the canal. Alongside the path is Jones's Mill - Wiltshire's only fen wetland. It is thought there once was a mill here. A little further on there is a Conservation area. Both are managed by Wiltshire Wildlife Trust.

Crossing the River Avon (one of a few in the UK!) we came across a very boggy area that had thoughtfully been transversed by some new decking coated with chicken wire to prevent slips in the wet weather. Without this wellys would definitely be needed!

The very pleasant wooded path gave way to a private road, turning right and then left onto another narrow path across a field we crossed the railway line, looking right we saw Pewsey Station a few yards away.

Our path then continued, through a housing estate and down through another narrow private road with some very nice houses flanking it. At the bottom we finally reached Pewsey High Street, turning right, the Co Op was about two minutes walk.

Having shopped we took the road route back which is shorter but mainly on pavement, with a bit of a hill to climb. We picked a few blackberries on the way to sustain us! We arrived back at the Wharf tired and ready for a cuppa and a piece of my lemon sponge. Well satisfied though that we had been good and had some exercise too!
