Macclesfield Canal - keep an eye out

Let's play "I spy"!

The Macclesfield Canal has some unique features to look out for.

The large stout milestones are unique. During the Second World War most of them were buried as a precaution against enemy soldiers using them to find their way around.

The Macclesfield Canal Society found all but three and have restored them.  The three missing ones were replaced by new ones, cut from local stone.

There are six of these bridges on the canal and they are beautifully constructed. Known as "change bridges", or the evocative "snake bridges", they allowed the towing horse to cross the canal when the towpath changed sides. The detail and steep slope can be seen here at Morris Bridge (76)

There are a number of aqueducts too - we have crossed Poole Aqueduct, Red Bull Aqueduct, Watery Lane Aqueduct and immediately ahead of us is Dog Lane Aqueduct.

Apparently there are more impressive ones to come!
