One lock down

Lock 13 in the Audlem flight

Last night we went to the folk evening in the Shroppie Fly. It was a busy one and came up to expectations! Some of the regulars are narrowboaters or have their boat at Audlem. There was a real mix of instruments: at least 5 violins, guitars, banjo, hurdy gurdy, piano accordians, penny whistles, recorders and a variety of percussion instruments.

This morning we moved, as you can see from our location on the side bar, but only down one lock, after filling up with water: to a lovely mooring overlooking the fields and Moss Hall. We are now moored in front of narrowboat Equinox, with this glorious view.

The diversion we took the other day, when we were following footpaths, led us to the field below us. Following the footpath away from the main road that leads to Chester Road in Audlem takes the walker down again towards Moss Hall. We turned off the lane and into a field, following the footpath signs.

It was in this field that I finally found my first spring lambs! It was lovely hearing all the baaing around us and seeing the lambs chasing after their mums.

The footpath cuts straight across the sheep field; on our right was Moss Hall. The Hall is just below the Shropshire Union Canal but is mainly hidden from the towpath.

The Hall was built in the 17th century by the Massy family. In 1760, the Hall passed to Robert Taylor (William Massy's son-in-law). It was later bought by the first Earl Kilmorey of Shavington Hall who owned it until 1880.

Looking the other way the line of narrowboats moored above the field is just visible.

A steepish climb and we were back on the towpath between locks 13 and 14, where we are now moored (but weren't then!).
