Breezy Shropshire Union

Moored on the Shroppie

Much as we love the Shropshire Union Canal we have found it to be one of the breeziest canals! I have avoided the word "windy" so as not to confuse things. It is a Thomas Telford canal, so in places it is very straight through cuttings and on embankments.

The farm land around can be very flat - hence the wind whips across or up and down the cut. By some strange coincidence (not deliberate planning!) we were on the Shroppie about this time last year!

I see from my photos of last year that Spring was much further advanced though. The photo below is of us passing under Chillington Bridge (9), Avenue Bridge ahead - note my tulips. This year there is absolutely no sign of flowers yet!

The moorings here, although lovely, are exposed to the wind and so as I write we are being gently rocked and with the side doors open I can see clouds scudding by. There is a feel of spring in the air as the sun is shining, our Morso stove is nearly out and yet it is still 24 degrees in the boat.

Another sign of spring is the number of boats around, including Nb Double Six from Gailey, a JD Boats share boat. Narrowboat Armadillo is ahead of us and, like us, is planning to be off tomorrow! But we will probably go beyond Brewood (pronounced "Brood", remember?)
