Rainy Days Muse

Is this the end of summer?

It seems to me that August has been a "bad" month for the last few years. However September and October and even the beginning of November have been better. All this rain is not good for the farmers who are just about ready to harvest around here.

The level of water on the Kennet and Avon has dropped and so maybe some of this rain will help, although to date there does not seem to be much of a difference. The water has to be pumped up to the long pound at Devizes and to the summit above the Crofton flight then "carried" down the Wotton Rivers locks onto the long pound too. If the pumps are not working well, they are turned off for repairs or dare I say it, to save money it quickly makes a difference to the water level here. So rainfall possible may not make much difference.

Our local ducks are more vocal so maybe they enjoy the rain and I am surprised to see that canoeists are undaunted by the weather and continue their sport in torrential rain. They get wet anyway so why not?

In the night when it rains the noise on the roof can be loud. I am reminded of my teenage camping in bell tents, lying awake listening to the rain drumming on the canvas. The emotions are the same - a feeling of being snug and warm in the dry and relaxing to the sound which eventually enduces slumber. With the porthole in the bedroom open the smell of the rain is also a reminder, but not mixed with  the smell of grass!

Lets hope that things improve for the weekend or at the very least in September for the start of our adventure.
