Engine Service

John spent some time down the engine hole yesterday. The oil has been changed, we have a new oil filter and stopped a small diesel leak, cleaned the bilge and finally filled the stern greaser. Wow what a busy boy! I must be honest and say that he had some help too - from one of our fellow boaters here who can turn her hand to almost anything to do with boat maintenance. Pen is also a wiz carpenter and has done some lovely work for herself and others.

The hot weather has meant we have had some very pleasant evenings and so we see much more of everybody too as folks get out of their boats, sit on sterns and in bows chatting. However the nights are hot even with all the port holes open and the Houdini hatch. Last night it sounded as if we had a fish attack! Something under the boat hit the bottom with an almighty thud, not once but twice! I had visions of one of the huge pikes in the canal head butting us, muttering "get out of here you metal nuisance"! Needless to say John slept through it.

The canal is definitely down - lack of rain, open paddles and, someone said, problems with the pumps. The promised rain has not materialized so far. A friend up at Wootton Rivers told me that he is aground and listing and hopes there will be more water soon!

This hasn't deterred a couple of hotel boats in the last few days though.
