Probably not a holiday theme!

But, Hey - it is Saturday, or is it Boxing Day?

Birmingham is the UK's second largest city - so what makes a city! A university, a cathedral or either/or!

In Birmingham's case, it has three Universities and two Cathedrals! I am going to take you on a very quick tour of Birmingham University - not the "other" Universities. So to you students out there, my apologies if I remind you of some studies you are trying to forget over the "vac"!

The Uni celebrated it's Centenary  this year and was the UK's first civic university. It was opened by Edward VII in July 1909.

The original buildings are beautiful - if you like Edwardian architecture! Now I have to be careful with my facts, as my brother works there, so he was our guide!

Chancellor's Court epitomizes the heart of the Uni - here are the Aston Webb buildings and a memorial to the founder - Joseph Chamberlain - father of Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain

The Aston Webb building is at its heart (Sir Aston Webb was the leading architect then) and is an impressive building with a frieze of "Midlands at work" and statues of the greatest philosophers, engineers and the "local boy", a certain Mr Will Shakespeare!

On campus there is a sculpture trail around the campus, it includes statues and modern sculptures - some of which have been controversial in their placement and execution!

This next sculpture has been moved to a more discreet location - but I am sure presents a challenge at Rag Week!

Finally - and for you boaters, this may be of interest - the Birmingham and Worcester Canal runs through the extended campus. The University has its own station and surprise, surprise, beside the railway line is -

frozen B and W canalYes - it's frozen over!

So - if you get a chance, it is really worth a visit to Birmingham University - have a look at the Visitor information for all (much more than this taster!) that is on offer.

Oh! - and see if you can find a friendly Professor at a loose end to act as your guide!
