Boaters Banter?

Is any get together, or gathering of boaters, a Banter?

If so, maybe the NABO AGM at Wolverhampton Boat Club should count as one!

We have just returned from the meeting, which was an interesting and enjoyable experience. Once the "official" business was completed, Questions from the Floor was a bit like a Banter - questions, answers and discussion on "hot" boating topics.

A good lunch too!

For most, if not all boaters present, the current issues are - moorings proposals and consultation, state of the waterways, and the funding and competence of British Waterways.

The NABO Council is very active in representing their members in these areas, attending meetings, consultations and user groups, talking directly to BW and Government. BUT NABO needs more active members to help to cover the huge number of meetings that take place at all levels and across the country.

If you care about our canals and inland waterways and want to continue being able to enjoy them, it is imperative that your voice is heard, as an individual or as part of an organisation. We need to "shout" long and hard and make sure informed decisions are made, rather than "be done to".

One of the points I picked up was that boaters should make more use of the BW Complaints System - all public organisations have to have one in place and there are required standards and timings for response and potential action. If you have a problem with BW or on their waters make a "Formal Complaint". BUT - this document is an important read for anyone who plans to complain! "Brickbats" are easier to find at the moment; however, we should also give them "bouquets" if appropriate. We have had occasion to do so in our travels!

In the afternoon the Guest Speaker was Richard Fairhurst

Richard is the Editor of the magazine Waterways World and gave an amusing and informative talk on his role and, as a boater, is obviously a real canal enthusiast. Like us all he wants to see this unique wonderful asset retained and maintained for all - boaters, local communities and other users.
