Slow progress on the Rochdale

So what was so slow?

The water tap at Hebden Bridge on the Rochdale Canal, that's what! We needed to fill up before we moved on and it took an absolute age. We had lunch, did the "poo tank". Still the tank was not full!  I planted some interim chyrsanthemums that I picked up cheaply in Hebden Bridge. John had a natter to nb "The Kids Inheritance", moored opposite and still we waited!

Finally, an hour and ten minutes later, we were full and John walked up to Black Pit Lock to set it. The top paddles on these locks seem unpredictable as the boat moves from side to side and the water entering on the same side does not keep it against the side. So I decided to experiment in the next lock!

In Stubbing Lower Lock (10) I entered on the Towpath side (right). Despite keeping Epiphany back she moved left and stayed there! John had opened the paddle on the off side first, so that did not solve it! The left gate did not open fully, so a kind passer by opened the right one - this was getting silly!

So I had another idea for Stubbing Upper Lock (11). Eureka - keep the boat to the right, open the right paddles and just keep her back, correcting any drift to the left! However, I bet you that the next lock we tackle will be different! We will see.

We were stopping for the night at Stubbing Wharf - the pub there has Story Telling this evening, we hope! If not we will have a drink anyway.

Talking about entertainment, last night we had a really great evening. We went to The Trades Club, just near Black Pit Lock to hear "State of Undress". They are a Dorset band who play a mix of folk country rock blues! They were brilliant - good enough for Cropredy's Fairport Convention Festival.

If they are near you whilst they are on their TOUR go to hear them. We don't often buy CDs but we did theirs (though they are MUCH better live)!
