Power by the River Calder

Steam and power between Thornhill and Shepley on the Calder and Hebble Navigation

This section of the Calder and Hebble Navigation cuts through open industrial wasteland. It is all overgrown and "returned to nature" but there have been plans for re-development. We saw no sign of this as we passed!

Once there was a large power station. Remains of the wharves can still be seen amongst the undergrowth

Coal was unloaded from barges and taken to fuel the power stationwharfs

Hereabouts was also a large railway junction and the railway bridge over the navigation must have carried some of the large steam engines that plied the line.
