Contrasts - reminiscences and indulgence

Today is such a contrast to yesterday!

Yesterday, on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal, we had one shower and hot sun; today we have lots of showers and no sun. But there are some hardy golfers out on the course - not many hardy boaters though. This includes us, as we decided to stay put after a late leisurely breakfast and morning!

One boat went past about 8 am but the boat in front of us has not moved yet either! The boat behind us is unable to move - it is sticking out of the water!

So what does one do on a wet day moored in the countryside? After the frenetic activity of yesterday we relax! Actually there is relaxing and relaxing! Me - I can't stay sitting down for too long without a job to do! So a bit of a clean around and then some sewing. John - lots of paperwork to sort out and a catch up on the boating world!

Yesterday I said I was fed up with towns and cities - well, I was thinking back to the ones we have visited and thought I would try and find an "iconic" photo of each one to remind myself what I enjoyed in each place. I shall start with The Shropshire Union Canal in April. Here goes, with links to more photos and further info -

ChesterCathedral  The Cathedral from the Wall

Northwich (River Weaver, April)library  The Brunner Library, typical of the architecture

Runcorn (Runcorn Branch of L and L Canal. May)bridges The Bridges over the Manchester Ship Canal

Manchester (Bridgewater Canal and Castlefield Basin, May)Town hall  Manchester Town Hall

Lancaster (Lancaster Canal, via the Ribble Link, June)Ashton memorial  Ashton Memorial, Williamson Park

Lancaster is special for us as it is the home of our son - we have now discovered why he loves it so much!

There is more about the Ribble Link here - River Douglas and Savick Brook, Savick Brook and Locks, Staircase Locks.

I could put lots of photos up of the next two cities - they were my favourites in all our travels so far. The canals they are on are something special too - the Lancaster Canal and the new Liverpool Link of the Leeds and Liverpool Canal.

Liverpool (L and L, Liverpool Link, July)Cathedral  The Cathedral

Oh go on - let me indulge myself. The dome of the Port of Liverpool Buildingdome

The Liverpool Link in detail - Hancocks Swing Bridge to Eldonian Basin, Stanley Locks and Docks, Princes Dock to Canning Dock, Canning to Salthouse Dock, Salthouse Dock.

Wigan (L and L)Wigan Pier  The Pier, because it is so daft that Wigan is famous for a bit of iron!

That was so hard as I have so many photos! Where next? Watch this space.
