"Ferry Across The Mersey" - la la la

We can sing it, now we can say we have done it!

So we took the Ferry across the Mersey the other day. It was rather blustery and the sun only peeked out but it was really worth the trip!

The Ferry service is 850 years old. We travelled on Snowdroplife ring

We travelled up the Liverpool side of the River Mersey and it was amazing to see the Liverpool Waterfront from the river rather than the canal!

The canal is not visible at all but knowing the buildings that we passed we could trace its route. Victoria Clock Tower is in the foreground and the tobacco warehouse looms large!

Can you see Stanley Locks (I think not!)Victoria Clock

The ferry turned towards New Brighton on the Wirral and we could just make out the Lighthouse on Perch Rock. The Lighthouse last shone in 1973 and the building is now available as an holiday "cottage"!

The Wirral and Birkenhead are opposite Liverpool on the River MerseyBirkenhead

Birkenhead is a well known ship building area and the famous Camell Laird Yard is here.

The huge buildings are the warship hallsCamell Laird

Can you name some of their famous ships? They produced aircraft carriers, battleships, cruisers, destroyers, even submarines in those halls. Was HMS Ark Royal, HMS Argonaut, HMS Renown or the Mauretania on your list?

The Ferry uses two other Termini - this one at Seacombe in WallaseySeacombe terminal

The floating landing stages were all constructed in 1863 by William Carson and the ferry draws up to them gingerly, the drawbridge comes down and passengers disembark here for the new Spaceport attraction.

Beside it is the U Boat 534, now a visitor attraction too. The Booking Hall is a listed building and the passenger bridge and landing stage featured in the film Chariots of Fire.

The Ferry turned towards Liverpool after calling at Woodside and we were treated to the Liverpool skyline once again!

Have I whetted your appetite for more! Well you will just have to visit Liverpool for yourself. The whole experience is almost overwhelming as there is so much to do. I have one or two more of our "excursions" to blog about before we leave!
