Glasson Village - a Lancashire Port

Glasson Village a popular destination for explorers?

Glasson Village was built to service the Port of Glasson and has some typical Lancashire cottages. A wanderer in the few back streets is rewarded by quaint rows built in Lancashire stone - all hidden behind parked cars! There are also a number of factories associated with the current use of the port.

The main street is Tithebarn Hill, a climb up to view the Lune EstuaryTithebarn Hill

At the top we could just make out the Isle of Man FerryHeysham Ferry

Less attractive is the power station at Heysham!Heysham power station

Half way up (or down) we could see the Ashton Memorial in LancasterAshton Memorial

Returning to the bottom of the Hill we spotted this sign by the post boxNo PO

So alter your Nicholson,  First Mate Guide and Lancaster Canal Guide! The nearest POs are Galgate or Lancaster!

When we went into the shop by the dock (it sells basic provisions, papers, etc) the owner confirmed that the Post Office closed in April 2008, victim of the sub-post office cull. He moved his business around to near the cafe and souvenir shop and does well from all the visitors.

Ah - my reference to explorers! As I have already blogged, the locks down the Glasson Branch were a bit of an adventure for us and explorers on boats may find the same! For this reason I think many moor at Galgate and walk down, joining the many explorers/walkers who walk the towpath. It has been quite busy whilst we have been here. I imagine that in the summer and in school holidays there are plenty of walkers and people looking at the boats!

Official visitor moorings are at the far end of the basin. 9 days max + water pointVisitor moorings

There are also a few just before the permanent moorings by the basin towpath. These seem popular with cruisers as the narrowboats that have come down since us have all moored on the VMs.

It is good fishing here, this one was caught by the VMs!fisherman

If you have £700 pcm this Lock Keepers cottage is for rentLock Keepers Cottage

The nearest pub is VERY near - at the other end of the swing bridgeVictoria Inn
That's the Victoria Inn - the other village pub, The Dalton Arms, isn't so photogenic.
If you get "lost" after a "few" there is an handy signpost by the Vicsignpost

We have enjoyed our visit to Glasson Basin and would recommend the trip down - just remember that at least one of the crew needs strong arms and back for the locks!
