Morecambe, the sea-side town with a view of the Lakes

I jinxed the weather with yesterday's blog!

To be fair we were expecting a day of rain, but hoped that the forecast was wrong! Still, it has given us both a chance to catch up on some indoor jobs!

I thought I would remind myself of yesterday's weather and tell you about our bus trip to Morecambe! We changed buses at the bus station when we returned from our Lune walk as we still had a bit of energy - just!

The bus arrived at Morecambe Promenade and carried on down it with stops all along. We chose to get off by the old railway station and opposite this hotel.

The Midland Hotel, Art Deco and Grade II listedMidland Hotel

Do you recognise it? It has been used in TV programmes most notably Poirot - with a canal connection, as David Suchet, the actor who plays Poirot, is a boater and actively supports and campaigns for the Inland Waterways.

The hotel was built in 1933 and refurbished in 2006, finally reopening in 2008. It has quite an history and is part of the railway age, having been built by the London, Midland and Scottish (LMS ) Railway.

We walked back towards the shops and the way the bus had come. Further along the Promenade there is a memorial to a certain comedian. Most people our age will immediately recognise the statue - not John, the one next to him!

Ah! Eric Morecambe was a "one off" and they don't make comedians like him nowadays!

There are some fabulous views from the Promenade:

My impression of Morecambe Bay was enhanced by what we saw. I described the sea as brown and uninteresting in a past blog. Yesterday the sea was blue and the views were certainly lovely. On a good day I can see the attraction - as did others, of all ages, soaking up the sun!

Small bays have been created by stone jetties and this makes for safe paddling! The sea is not very deep and there are sand banks as the boats above illustrate!

However we could not get away from thoughts of canals!trolley

Weary by now we sat on a seat and watched the tide come in - it was time to catch the bus back to Lancaster!
