A quick tour of central Manchester and the canal basins

A walk into Manchester from Castlefield Basin

Albert Square is arguably the centre of Manchester. Sited here are the Neo-Gothic Town Hall and a memorial statue to Gladstone. It is a large open space used for events and just sitting and soaking up the atmosphere of the city.

The Town Hall is sometimes open to the public and tours can be booked. We were only able to get into the foyer, but the architecture is amazing and there are a number of marble busts of famous people!

We walked around St Peter's Square and then on down Peter Street. Notable buildings here were the Theatre Royale and the Radisson Edwardian Hotel.

We continued down Quay Street and turning into Lower Byrom Street we came across the MOSI. This is the Museum of Science and Industry, much to be recommended we gather. Unfortunately we do not have time to "do" everything so gave this a miss!

Lower Byrom Street led us to the Canal Events area at the end of the Staffordshire Arm.

The YMCA is here with a launderette, but the boats looked as if they were there for the duration! We continued on and crossed the Kenworth Arm taking us back to the footbridge at the entrance to the Castlefield Basin.

There was a boat just going into the Rochdale Arm, up Deansgate Locks, so we watched with interest! But that is a Blog for another day as my bed calls!
