Barnton Tunnelling or Over the Top

Our walk over Barnton Tunnel

The tunnel is in a dip in the hillside, almost as if it had subsided. At least that is the best way I can describe it. The path runs alongside the dip and through a wooded section and then out into the open.

A private BW road leads towards the western portal.  This road is also the access road to Saltersford Locks and its cottages on the River Weaver.

My mobile phone photos give some idea of it all!

If you look carefully you can just see the headlight of a boat coming through!

Tomorrow (now today!) we will go through Barnton Tunnel and make our way up to Preston Brook and "morph" onto the Bridgewater Canal! The Trent & Mersey becomes the Bridgewater after Preston Brook Tunnel - rather like the invisible Date Line I suppose!
