Train Spotting

Euston to Northwich - 3 hours 15 minutes, 212 miles, 0 locks, numerous bridges

I have been a journeying!

I left John here at Northwich, moored by Town Bridge

I was London bound. The week has been filled with hospital and GP appointments, a visit to the Banbury area and a couple of days with my sister in Beckenham.

Now you know why he has been in charge of our Blog - very skilfully I must say! Now you are stuck with me again!

Returning today by train, I played "Spot the Canal". I had my nose in a book but seemed to have the knack of looking up each time we neared a canal!

I spotted the Grand Union Canal at Buckby and Wilton Marina and then Long Buckby Wharf. Next I looked up to see Huddlesford Junction and Lichfield Cathedral in the distance. After this came the Trent and Mersey Canal and the distinctive Rugeley chimneys, belching out steam.

The railway line runs opposite Great Heywood Junction and past Great Heywood Marina and then Stone and on into Stoke, over the lock flight.

I saw glimpses of the Macclesfield Canal which is arguably one of the loveliest canals. The train stopped in Macclesfield and then continued onwards to Manchester.

I changed trains at Stockport, in the Manchester suburbs and caught the Chester train to Northwich.

We came alongside the Middlewich Branch of the Shroppie and I saw "our" railway bridge. By this I mean the one where we had the argument with the Anglo Welsh hire boat!

The "local" train went past the huge factory on the Trent and Mersey and then Northwich Boats before arriving at Northwich. The station is about 20 minutes gentle walk from the centre of town. John met me and we called in on Mr Sainsbury and then wandered back taking in some of the Northwich "sights".

I was quite proud of myself for recognising familiar sights on the canals as everything looks very different from a train window as it flashes by. I was surprised that there appeared to be very few boats on the move.

It is good to be home alongside these lovely gardens

Tomorrow we move off to explore the rest of the Weaver Navigation downstream.
