Diverted off the River Weaver

For security reasons, which I suspect are obvious, we don't say when we are away from the boat, unless we are certain that the mooring is secure. Last week, I (John) had to visit my brother in Bristol. Hands up if you knew I was away. Fiona stayed on Epiphany, and reported with the royal "we".

The plan was originally to catch the train from Northwich, but the local lockie at Hunt's Lock suggested that Vale Royal was a better mooring (how right she was), and Hartford would be a better station for the connection (right again). On Wednesday afternoon, last week I went for a reconnaisance walk from Vale Royal Lock to Hartford. It must have been about five miles round trip, bearing in mind the cul de sacs that seem to forget that people walk places still. The car rules! Still, eventually I found the shortest route, which took about 50 minutes on Thursday morning. The first half is along the towpath, passing bluebells and then through the woods - a lovely walk, passing under the railway viaduct I was to cross a little later.

Hartford station is on the Liverpool line, so I changed at Wolverhampton
On the way I read my Canal Boat magazine, which included an article about the Kennet and Avon Canal around Bath. As our business involved a visit to Bath, we found time to visit our friends at Bath Narrowboats.  Great to see them again, and later share an evening drink at Saltford.

Our walk took us along the towpath

and through Cleveland Tunnel, which is 173 feet long

and runs under Cleveland House

the former headquarters of the Kennet and Avon Canal Company.

Apparently a hole in the tunnel roof

was employed to exchange paperwork between clerks above and bargees below, though why the communicating chimney apparently comes up in the office fireplace I'm not sure!

Sorry the pictures aren't up to the usual standard - I only had my phone to use.
