Who needs words on a day like this?

Bramble Cuttings to Anderton Lift - 3 hours 10 minutes, 7.8 miles, 0 locks

I am a woman of few words this afternoon. It had been a glorious day so I will let the photos speak for themselves!

Bramble Cuttings

Bridge 178 near Whatcroft Hall

We passed a number of Flashes or lagoons where the earth has subsided  from salt extraction and the water has encroached, hiding the canal bank.

In Billinge Flash there is a sunken hulk

Orchard Marina is at Broken Cross on the outskirts of Northwich and has boats moored on line too

At Northwich, industry is very much in evidence, both old and new.

Bruner Monde and Co factory after bridge 186

This factory spans a large area before Wyncham Wharf where there are a number of boat industries and many boats moored on line!

Contrast all the new industries with The Old Lion Salt Works

The Thompson family founded this open pan salt works at Marston in 1842. They produced fishery salt, crystal salt and lump salt. Wild brine was evaporated in a large iron pan. The crystals formed were put into tubs, forming blocks which were dried in brick stove houses. They were then exported (using the canal on the first leg of the journey) to India, Canada and West Africa. The works closed in 1986 but are now being restored and open to the public.

At Anderton Marina they are selling off some of the hire boats

Two more bridges and the moorings for the Anderton Lift begin

The "Cathedral of the Waterways"

We are excited, as tomorrow we take Epiphany down the Lift and on to the River Weaver. This is a trip we have promised ourselves for a number of years. We went down on the trip boat not long after the Lift was re-opened in 2002, after restoration. It will be so different to take our own boat down!
