Avoiding boats on our way to Chester

Knolls Bridge to Chester's Tower Wharf - 0.49 minutes, 1.91 miles, 0 locks

We waited at our Knolls Bridge mooring until we saw some boats moving. These were more of the working and historic boats on their way to Ellesmere Port for the Easter weekend gathering. We only had a short journey to do, but wanted to make sure of a mooring at Tower Wharf.

First past us was Elizabeth. She was closely followed by Orion and then Aquarius - an unconverted ex GUCC Woolwich Motor. It was time to move!

We passed the golf course and today there were a few golfers out. I was surprised there were not more. (Maybe they were waiting to be armchair golfers?)

We continued to meet boats, singly and in convoys right up to our arrival at Tower Wharf. At Tower Warf a few working boats remained but there was room for us.

Once we were moored I took more photos of the boats and the Wharf area and watched as the last of them left. We became part of the "exhibition" as there were a number of people watching and they had a good look at Epiphany too!

After lunch we went for a walk along the Riverside Walk. This took us down the Dee Arm locks and it follows the River Dee as it makes a natural defence for the city, outside the city walls. It passes around the Race Course and the walls can also be seen from the walk.

We went up on the City wall at Recorders Steps and walked back to Tower Wharf via the walls, the long way round. It is a fascinating walk which gives a good view of the city, old buildings, Roman Amphitheatre, Cathedral and canal. It is easy to get a flavour of what a defence they were and we even imagined pouring hot oil on our enemies below!

Of course, we took lots of photos today and when I have sorted them all out will put them up on the website and blog the links as appropriate. It will be a bit of a marathon I think, so watch this space!
