Boat Museum at Ellesmere and Manchester Ship Canal v the Shroppie

Firstly I must thank all of you who have empathised with us over the theft of my camera. I am missing it a lot as it was faster and took higher resolution photos than my old one. Our insurance will come up trumps soon so I just have to be patient!

We took a walk down by the Manchester Ship Canal this morning

Entrance to the Shroppie

Boats can use this as a route to the River Weaver by prior arrangement with  Ellesmere Port  (to open the swing bridge), the Ship Canal Company and with BW for Weston Marsh Lock on the Weaver. It is only a trip for the experienced boater, but not for us this time as we have another agenda.

Lock and swing bridge leading into the Museum area

Whitby Paired Locks that take a boat up to where we were moored

To get into the lower basin of the Museum there is another wide lock to the right. Above the swing bridge there is a sunken boat, (see above), it is not marked and only its funnel is above water. Great care would be needed to swing right!

I was sorry that we did not see a big ship navigating the MSC. It was time to walk back to the "Good Ship Epiphany" and to prepare to leave before the "hoards" descend for the Easter weekend!

It was a really good experience and we thought everything was well signed, well laid out and we really enjoyed our visit.

For a preview, or just to enjoy our visit too, there are photos of the Museum and exhibits in our Photo Gallery. See the variety of boats, the Skinners boat MB Friendship (the Skinners were the last of the working boat people), the locks and basins and also the preserved buildings.
