There are always lessons to be learned

Down the locks into Chester Town Centre - 1 hour 38 minutes, 1.40 miles, 3 locks

We are becoming "early starters"! By that I mean getting going before 10am! Hmm, much good it did us today as you will see.

We came down the three locks - Tarvin, Chemistry and Hoole Lane Locks - on our own. It was a bit windy and some of the overflows were running fast.  I am a little stiff from winding the geared paddles, I wonder if it takes 50 turns like the Caen Hill flight on the K & A. The elsan in Hoole Lane Lock has a water tap but no water for flushing out.

We moored just before Cow and Bridge (123E) as we planned to call in at Tesco. Just after we moored my camera was stolen - an arm reached in to the bows and took it from the table just as I was going through the bow doors to pick it up. I shouted but the opportunist thief ran off - all I could see was a back in a "hoody".

Needless to say I was rather upset - but lesson learned (again) NEVER leave anything valuable unattended for even a moment, particularly in a City environment. The cratch cover is now firmly shut, and everything out of sight, including the mooring hook we keep for mooring on piling as it could be used to break the glass.

So we have lost the photos from this morning, a FUJI camera and data card and 4 rechargeable batteries. What is really horrid is that every lad I see in a hoody makes me immediately suspicious and they are not all thieves.

We are claiming it on our contents insurance, but that will take a while. We are now waiting for the Police as the theft is classed as a burglary as we live on the boat. Not that the Police can do anything, but they have to follow procedure! They have just rung for more details and now do not need to visit us!

The DC will check the CCTV and the second-hand shops, but despite giving him the serial number I do not hold out much hope.

Fortunately I still have my old camera, it is not so good but we can continue to take photos - once we get moving again. We still have to visit Tesco and the PO. I am not particularly enamoured of this mooring and do not want to stay the night. However it seems that is is probably the best place to stay having wandered down the towpath.

Moored at Cows Lane Bridge - can you spot the CCTV camera?
