A "Shroppie" Village - really lovely

Audlem is a must see place on the Shropshire Union Canal.

It is not far to explore further than the Shroppie Fly and Audlem Mill. The village is right by the canal too!

The Church of St James the Great dominates the skyline, built on an outcrop of red sandstone with the Butter Market below. The hill is thought to be a Celtic burial ground.

St James and the Butter Market

It is a fascinating church and has had various additions and restorations since it was founded in the 13th C by Thomas de Aldelime. The most recent are very sympathetic and clever blending well with the older parts and I was very impressed at the care that is obviously lavished on the church.

The Roll of Vicars goes so far back it is pre Reformation and some is in Latin

The Old Priests House is opposite but could do with a bit of restoration too

They say Boaters are always talking toilets! I have never seen a public toilet labelled like the one on the left here!
