A really good evenings entertainment

The Shroppie Fly and Wharf

The Shroppie Fly is a very well known pub. It is in a restored canal warehouse and patronised by boaters and locals alike! You can eat there, play pool there, swap books there, sit and enjoy the sunshine and watch the boats go by or just soak up the historic atmosphere of the pub and wharf.

Yesterday night's reflection of the Fly

On Saturday evenings the Fly puts on live music but on Monday evenings the patrons supply the music in a free format folk evening. We went across around 8.30 pm and there was already a crowd of drinkers listening to the Folk music.

We settled ourselves for a good evening. There was a multitude of instruments - guitars, violins, recorders, squeeze box, piano accordions, a hurdy gurdy, a mandolin, an historic zither and numerous percussion instruments!

It was great to hear all that talent and some lovely voices. We joined in the singing when we knew the song and picked them up if we didn't. Our feet did not stop tapping! John wished he had repaired his guitar and taken along some Cornish folk songs. We suddenly missed Cornwall and the Cornish folk songs and voices!

It reminded us so much of our great friend Mike O'Connor back in Cornwall. He is a wonderful story teller and folk singer, producing some amazing Cornish "shows" (link to our favourite!) on the Folk circuit. How about that for a plug, Mike?

Sited next door to the Shroppie Fly is  Audlem Mill, restored and now a canal and craft shop. There is an exhibition of canal paintings on the second floor. We loved some of them and were sad that most of these were just too big for our home as they needed to be seen more than 3 feet away!
