Talking favourite moorings

2 hours 12 minutes, 3.13 miles, 2 locks

We were very glad to leave Wolseley Bridge this morning as they were re-surfacing the road. It was so noisy we could hardly hear each other once outside the boat!

The River Trent continued to keep us company as we made our way towards Little and Great Haywood. Colwich lock was muddy as usual from the cows crossing the bridge just before the lock! Muggins managed to get the boat well and truly stuck as I waited for a boat to come down the lock. The stern was well and truly aground on the off-side - should have moored temporarily at the lock landing! Why are we always wise after the event?

A "kind" bystander (disguised as John with a cross face!) caught the bow rope I threw at him and pulled the boat off with a little help from the engine! After that I entered the lock perfectly despite the bywash pushing me over. See - I can control the boat after all!

Haywood lock caused no such excitement as I got off to do my exercise for the day!

The ground paddle at the top was well and truly broken and wrapped in a black bin bag and BW Aware yellow tape! Consequently the lock took some time to fill, enough time to take photos!

Epiphany in Haywood lock

At Great Haywood Junction we moored to top up the water tank, get rid of the rubbish and failed to empty the cassette! We pay our licence and think we should be able to use BW facilities for free. John refused to pay Anglo Welsh for the use of the elsan so we will wait till we get to Penkridge. We were not impressed, as it is a long distance from Peel Wharf to Penkridge for full facilities.

This must be one of the most photographed bridges!

We turned on to the Staffs and Worcs under it and introduced Epiphany to our old "home" canal. We made for one of our favourite moorings - Tixall Wide. Wide Water on the K & A was always a smaller version of this beautiful mooring. We have Tixall Gate house on one side and the Trent Valley on the other. Luckily for us there was room to moor right opposite the Gate House.
