The Ashby Canal - Shackerstone to Snarestone and back to Bosworth

4 hours 51 minutes, 11.95 miles

We woke yesterday to a wonderful sunny morning, which improved as the warmth of the sun reached us.

Snarestone tunnel has a bend in it and the roof becomes lower towards the North portal. Once through it is not far to the current head of navigation or "Cut End".

We stopped to water up and empty the elsan. I took a walk along the line of the un-restored canal and took a few photos. The next stage started this morning with the construction of the stop lock, costing half a million pounds. Another 10 million (at current rates) is needed to restore the next four miles after that.

To be restored

The old pumping station looks rather neglected

Returning through Snarestone tunnel I noticed this plaque on the North portal

You will need to click on it to read the "rules of the road"

We had a very pleasant cruise back to Market Bosworth and I could not help contrasting this new development canal side with the neglected-to-be-restored section and the huge job ahead of the stalwart Ashby Canal Association.

We moored for the night at the Battlefield moorings. It was still warm and sunny and our friends Chris and Angela did the Battlefield walk, thoroughly enjoying it! John and I "chilled" in the peaceful location!
