Ashby Canal and hire boats

4 hours 51 minutes, 11.95 miles (Trinity Marina to Shackerstone)

We said a glad goodbye to Trinity Marina this morning!

It was a bit overcast but mild and it is so good to be on the move again. Just as we slipped our mooring there were some loud toots, and again! I looked up and saw Les and Nb Valerie passing by on the canal, on their way back towards the Coventry Canal. We all waved frantically! It was a shame we only managed a "passing encounter" this time. Maybe we will see them again. I know John keeps an eye on their blog!

We made our way on to the canal and freedom beckoned! It was not long before we were out into the countryside. Higham On The Hill is a small village to the west, beyond is the huge testing ground of the Motor Industry Testing Association (MIRA). Shades of "Top Gear" and crash dummies spring to mind! It is not visible from the canal so petrol heads on boats can relax!

On the canal here at Wykin Bridge (21) are The Barge long term moorings

After Higham Bridge (23) Stoke Golding can be seen in the near distance

Moored red boats appear near Wharf Bridge (25) and these and the paint docks make a meeting of boats on the go more or less inevitable! This is Ashby Canal Company territory!

Stoke Golding Wharf is well kept and attractive and we rather liked the pump out lorry

More red boats are moored before you leave Stoke Golding at Foxwell's Bridge (26). Peeking in a couple, they look nice and well-presented inside!

Ashby Canal Hire boats moored on line

Beyond Foxwell's bridge is the small marina of Ashby Canal Centre. The entrance is attractive and nicely landscaped

We have been surprised by the number of boats on the canal so far. Boats that are moored, that is, not on the go. There are obviously popular places for long stayers, official long-term moorings and more places than we imagined to moor "away from it all". We spotted one or two from Trinity Marina - out  for the weekend. Who can blame them!
