The Ashby Canal - Scenic and tranquil

As we travelled up the Ashby Canal after a very quiet night, we began to relax even more. It was so good to be away from the hustle and bustle of Coventry and to travel through countryside with the occasional intrusion of village living!

Bulking Bridge (5) marks the beginning of a cutting

It is narrow in places, but probably two boats could pass with care

There is a static home park with some of the gardens reaching down to the canal; many of them lavish and obviously carefully tended.

On the approach to Burton Hastings, there is a line of long-term moorings on the offside

We were passed by a hire boat from Ashby Boat hire. The red livery is very smart, but I am not too sure about the lack of access to the bows!

Across the fields St Botolph's Church is set next to a farm but in pretty surroundings. It is a small church, relatively untouched by time.

So far, the only negative observation we have made is that the towpath can be rather muddy and narrow, and in a few places there has been bad erosion of the bank.
