The back story

2 hours 29 minutes, 5.64 miles, 0 locks

We woke to sun and birds! We planned a gentle morning, an early lunch and then we would move. A least four boats passed us this morning. I suspect everyone is beginning to move now, as we have seen the back of the cold weather for a bit.

But let me return to our trip from Coventry yesterday.

We squeezed through the smallest bridge on the system

There are lots of old industrial buildings at this end of the Coventry Canal: remnants, I suppose, of when Coventry was a hive of industry. Some of the old buildings have been given a new lease of life by building on top of them as below or adding to the existing buildings, as in Tower Court.

New on top of old

Tower Court

The Electric Wharf has a modern foot bridge

Electric Wharf
was part of the project to rejuvenate Coventry and is on the site of the old Power Station. It is a mix of live/work lofts and offices. It was created as a low energy/high-tech project using 80% of the reclaimed materials and making full use of the turbine halls.

Regeneration is all very well but it has not stopped the graffiti. There is a Canal Art Trail along the towpath and many of the information signs are unreadable. Some of the art itself has also suffered from the selfish art work of bored and destructive people.

Adam - this is not to put you off going to Coventry Basin! As for the Ashby, we will be on it for the next couple of weeks so may see you! Steve Haywood's article in Canal Boat will be too late for us!

More to come tomorrow, but tonight, for a complete change, the TV calls! "Master Chef" and then "Who Do You Think You Are?"
