Gosty Hill, fuel and a dog

Gosty Hill appeared around 3pm this afternoon

Ian and Alison and their Jack Russell, Bosun, travel their stretch of the canal selling diesel and solid fuel. Many a boater in this cold weather is glad to see their distinctive bow appearing in the distance.

When they came alongside us John had a really long chat with them. It was very interesting to hear more about their way of life and trade.

Bosun checking out these new customers!

The fuel boats are one of the important aspects of life on the canal and it is really important that boaters use them as much as possible. Use them or lose them, as the saying goes, particularly as they give a good deal on the price of diesel and solid fuel.

They travel in all weathers, all conditions and we admire their commitment. It can be "a dog's life", but today was a day for a dog to sunbathe whilst his owners worked!

Bosun in doggy bliss

Ian and Alison have been known to do a 19 hour day - this is no hobby! It is their livelihood. They were making for Hillmorton today and probably would not arrive until about 10 pm because of their customers on the way.

Bosun had done his work for the day!

The fuel boats all know each other and any loss of trade will affect them directly. They can be contacted by phone to find out where they are and how soon they will pass!

We are now fully fuelled and ready for off - if the weather permits, we hope to pull the pins tomorrow.
