The clue is in the picture

3 hours 9 minutes, 2.66 miles, 8 locks

We decided to start a little earlier this morning and set off in glorious sunshine because we wanted to get here >

A friendly Canal World Forum member (thanks Chris from Daedalus and Batavia) texted John this morning to say there was a good mooring above Ravens Lane lock in Berkhamsted. We wanted to do some shopping so we locked through the two locks to moor.

We went to the Post Office (in a thriving Christian Bookshop) and picked up our mail. We then wandered back through the street and the excellent market. Although the market is small it had some really good stalls - fresh fish, bread, cakes, and fruit and vegs to name but a few.

We also found the Book Stall at the back of the Town Hall - it is not easy to find. Hopefully in the Book Swap list the instructions are sufficient! It had paperbacks for 20p and hard backs for 30p. There was an excellent selection.

We patronised Tesco Express - cheaper than Waitrose, which is right by the canal. By then my trundle trolley was full! So we walked back to the boat for lunch.

After lunch we set off again. Above the next lock (53) where the favourite moorings are, we saw Triptaka with Chris at the side door! This was the boat we had come up the Apsley locks with. They had some books for us so we hovered and swapped bags! Thanks a lot, hope to see you again!

Most of the locks through Berkhamsted have vandal proof locks on the paddles, opened with a BW key. We went up the two Gas locks. I must be feeling better as I got off the boat to do the next two locks! It felt good to be doing them again! By now it was almost twilight and really cold. Time to moor, which we did just short of Dudswell lock 48.

As it is Sunday tomorrow the satellite dish has gone up so we can watch the Andrew Marr Show It has the added bonus that The Masters Tennis is on from the Royal Albert Hall so I caught some ot the doubles between Laconte/McNamara and Bates/Gullikson on ITV4. This evening it is Bates v McEnroe, now I wonder who will win that A good evening ahead then!
