I would rather be in a narrowboat than .... a tent!

tents

Tent "city"

These tents are our near neighbours in the shadow of the City Estate tower blocks behind Cambrian Wharf in Birmingham. But why? .....

I mentioned them at the end of yesterday's blog. The tents are "Occupy" Birmingham - and we had a chat with one of the Occupiers on our way back to narrowboat Epiphany yesterday.

"Occupy"

We listened, agreed with some of his points, disagreed with others but came away thinking that whatever "system" is in place eventually becomes subject to human nature, money and greed. History shows us this is true, but that does not mean we should not try to change things, so I admire their zeal and some of their idealistic views. However, I still would not want to be in a tent in this weather!

In complete contrast, but still a sign of our times, here are a couple more photos of the new Library of Birmingham, from the back this time. It can just be seen from the Farmers Bridge Lock Flight too and is yet another "iconic" building that rises from the skyline as boaters ascend the locks.

New Library of Birmingham at the junction of Cambridge Street and Brindley Place

Whilst doing a bit of research for this blog (as I do for all my blogs: that's why they take so long to write, as I get distracted!), I discovered the name of the firm of architects that designed the new Library. Would you believe it (and I am sure others have seen the joke) the firm is Mecanoo. Well I chuckled anyway! James May built a bridge of Meccano over the Liverpool Link, why not a library!

Close up of the "filigree rings" - the next Meccano kit?

Actually dare I whisper it - the building is growing on me, maybe when it is finished I shall like it!
