Guess the canal city

As narrowboat Epiphany is well and truly moored up at the moment I thought I would take you to another canal city.

This is a clue, but you might not see it from the canal unless you looked to the sky at the right place. So which city, is it? ......

The canal passes very near the city centre. There is rather a mix of architecture along the canal.

There is a very well known canalside  pub, its name refers to one of those tried and executed in the city many years ago. The pub below, though not so well known, is worth a visit too.

The canal from the same bridge, but leaving the city centre

So if you haven't guessed by now, here is my final clue. The city has a castle, until recently a prison. The city's nickname is because of the ultimate  punishment carried out there.
Go on tell me, what is the city? You are really clever if you know the nickname too!
