A "locky" day!

4.76 miles, 4 hours 21 mins, 13 locks, 1 swing bridge

No wonder I am tired! We shared the locks and the helm, but some of the lock beams were very heavy! We saw only four boats on the go - winter is here?

We left Berkhamsted after attending St Peters Church. A very full church and lively service mixed with traditional Sung Service and led by a large choir. Almost Cathedral - like but not quite!

Berkhamsted lock 53

The heavy rain of the night had cleared but we had a couple of showers and at one point the sun came out feebly!

As we passed Nb Tiami moored on the offside a voice said "are you Mrs Slee?". I owned up, "that must be John up ahead then?" (John was on the towpath walking to the next lock). "Yes" I replied, "We are fellow Cutweb members and know him from SOW". It was Debbie and Simon who had spotted Epiphany and put 2 and 2 together

The Berkhamsted locks could be called a pub crawl. First the Crystal Palace below bridge 141, then the Boat Inn at Ravens Lane lock (54), followed by the Rising Sun at lock 55.

The Crystal Palace pub used to have a window modelled on The Crystal Palace

Below Bottom Side Lock (57) these fisherman were ignoring the Angling Code well and truly! They were lucky that we came out the off side - as John could get on there!

At Bridge 146 we spotted another fellow Cutweb boat - Jannock, who used to moor at Cropredy. No sign of Graham though.

At Winkwell the Heron is very tame and did not move an inch as we passed him perched on a boat

I enjoyed holding the traffic up at Winkwell swing bridge

It looked pretty looking back through our fire smoke!

After Winkwell we were into the outskirts of Hemel Hempsted. Another three locks and we moored up just before Apsley lock 65 near Frogmore End.

Satellite dish up - we settled down to watch the Grand Prix. By the time I finish this we will know the result - yes, I am watching two screens at the same time And making dinner too!

Phew, was that nail biting - well done Lewes, F1 World Champion 2008. At least now we can hold our head up as a nation after that humiliating cricket defeat.
