Home is where your boat is

We are home again! Our boat is in Reading on the River Thames - so this must be home.

Moored in Reading on the Thames

Looking back on our wonderful break I could not resist .....

showing you some more photos of that most atmospheric of places in the Lake District - Wastwater and Wasdale Head. These photos are better than the ones I put up from my phone a few days ago. I am only learning how to use our mobile blog facility and used thumbnails instead of the proper photos so that did not help!. However I got it right on my Lune Aqueduct blog.

Towards the hills

Across the fields to the mountains on our way up from Lancaster

Eskmeals

Amazing clouds at Eskmeals Beach

From Eskmeals we motored towards Wasdale and turned down a side road to take this photo

Wasdale Hills

Wasdale ahead

I love hills - the fells around Lancaster make me feel very content, but the mountains and hills (once mountains, now eroded by weather) of the Lake District are just stunning, particularly in the late afternoon and evening light.

Puddle reflections

The up and down narrow roads had seen some rain

My parents had a water colour painting of Wastwater by William Heaton Cooper, born in Coniston in 1903 and one of the Lake District artists. It was the first print he published - in 1940 (I am pretty sure it was not an original).

Wastwater is the deepest lake. It is owned by the National Trust and is surrounded by the mountains Red Pike, Kirk Fell, Great Gable and Scafell Pike - England's highest mountain.

My photos cannot be compared to Heaton Cooper's genius - but here goes!

Wasdale Head

Dramatic Wasdale Head - Great Gable and Kirk Fell and a bit of Yewbarrow

As we drew nearer Wasdale Head, the clouds began to lower and the evening drew in. As we parked at Wasdale Head Inn, something like an "ethereal glacier" rolled down Great Gable.

We had a good meal in the typical Lake District Inn - very friendly, excellent food and atmospheric surroundings.
