Swan "song"

One of our most graceful water birds - in the water. The River Thames is a good place to photograph them.

They can be very territorial .......

Enjoy the next few photos and admire the beautiful swan.

Apart from the Thames, we have photos from all over the country! We have had them attack the boat to defend their young and hiss at us when we open the side doors and refuse to feed them. Even if we don't feed them, they still tap on the side of the boat at unearthly hours!

Sadly, we missed the annual Swan Upping, in July this year; it dates back 800 years. The Queen owns all the unmarked mute swans in open water in Britain. She is known as the Seigneur Of The Swans during the historic ceremony. The Loyal Toast is made between 4pm and 6pm at Romney Lock near Windsor. More info on the history of this ancient ceremony is on the Vintner's Company website.

Swans were a prized source of meat during Tudor times and their quills for writing. Although stiffer than the more usual goose quill, a swan's quill was said to last as long as 50 goose quills. Thank goodness they are no longer hunted for meat, feathers and quills.

sleeping swans

These two did not stir when I started the engine this morning

The cygnet was well and truly "not going to be disturbed" - he did open an eye when I spoke to him though.

one eye open

Just like cats they sleep "on alert"

We have seen them mate (for life), nest, feed and show off their families

Finally, yesterday, I caught two flying past as we cruised to Cliveden. What beauty on display:

So now I must get back to my photos of today's cruise from Cliveden to Medmenham - passing one of the River Thames' well known and popular places and locks, with gongoozlers watching our every move!
