Rain, reader and readjustment at Theale on the Kennet and Avon Canal

We like surprises and so I was glad to be surprised that the weather forecast was right for a change!

But it was not this bad!

We had another surprise too ....

It was a very wet night. I am not used to the patter of rain on the roof, so woke a number of times. However two of the narrowboats moored next to us were not deterred by the early morning rain and left well before we got up! One was worried about being "on the river" in the rain, but I think it will take a lot of downpours before we get any problems.

We had a surprise email from Simon, a loyal blog reader, and as a result invited him for a cuppa. It was great to put a name to a face and hopefully we will see him and maybe more of his family whilst we are in the area.

Theale "village" is a bit of a walk from the swing bridge and Simon offered us a lift as we needed a few bits of shopping. There is a Co-op on the main street, also a chemist, baker and lots of pubs!

We also checked out the church and the service times for tomorrow.

I did not take the camera with me, so both of us tried out the camera on our new "High Tech Cranberries". Those of you who know us well or follow us on Facebook will know that our previous phones had a fruity name so we renamed our new ones along the same theme!

Here are a couple more phone photos -

Not bad eh? It is taking some re-adjusting to new technology!

We are also readjusting to life back on the canal. It is 32 months since we were here, moored at Theale! Check out our journey yesterday, but in reverse, by clicking here. It seems strange to be moored in close formation and for narrowboats to be going past so close and so fast!

The house opposite our mooring (well shielded by thick growth of trees and bushes and a sturdy gate on the road) was the home of the singer/songwriter Kate Bush until about a year ago. The weir on her land was the one that caused controversy over ownership in 2006 - Sulhamstead weir is owned by BW and when it collapsed in 2006, I think they rather hoped it was owned by Kate!
