Banbury icons

"Ride a cock horse to Banbury Cross"

"To see a fine lady upon a white horse"

"With rings on her fingers and bells on her toes She will have music wherever she goes" The rings represent power, the bells are both musical bells and seven bluebells - the days of the week. The Lady, or Queen of the May has a crown of thirteen spring flowers, alternating daffodils and wild roses, symbolising the ancient 13 months. The juxtapostition of the two "icons" in Banbury

There is a butterfly on her crown and a moth on her hood. If you ever visit, look for the frog and the sun - the symbol of Banbury.
