The only boat moving

We were sad to leave Sandford Lock this morning - it is such a lovely peaceful mooring and easy for a narrowboat. Perhaps we will return on our way downstream. It was time to return upstream and we took our time, enjoying the experience of being the only boat "on the go"!

Cruiser Rumrunner near Rose Isle

Cruiser Rumrunner was still moored opposite Rose Isle - he saluted us as we went by! This is another lovely mooring and I really love the name of the boat.

On the private moorings just before Kennington Railway Bridge is an old Thames barge - covered with a tarp and minus a rudder. I don't think it will be going anywhere fast! Nor will the one gradually sinking at Salters Boathouse downstream of Donnington Road Bridge!

Iffley Lock Keeper appeared just in time to see us through - I love this lock, the covered bridges over the weirs, the "Mathematical Bridge", a tribute to the one over the River Cam, and the stonework of the lock and bridge there. This is the second reincarnation of the lock - realigned in 1924. There was once a corn mill and manor house - clickety click to map of old lock.

We passed the Isis pub, where canoes, strategically placed, prevent mooring directly outside and then on towards Donnington Road Bridge and Boathouse reach. We began to meet a few rowers - although the boathouses themselves appeared deserted.

rowers ahead

Once again we passed the lovely Corpus Christi College Barge - my brother has fond memories of this and apparently I have seen it moored below Folly Bridge near the "finish" when I was very little. Perhaps opposite where we are moored now! There used to be lines of these barges there. My brother notes the rowing colours are still on the barge and the steps up to the viewing roof to the right of the front door. I would just love to live here!

It was time to moor, as I said, just downstream from the Torpids and Eights finish, a stone commemorates Colin Cox 1945-1999, "Oarsman and Boatman dedicated to club and college rowing".

A lovely view in front of us, plenty of Japanese tourists to take our photo, school parties in Christchurch Meadows to ogle us and Folly Bridge within walking distance!
