One day our thaw will come

Will it won't it? - your guess is as good as mine!

E and botas moored outside the JBOne day this will be grass and water, or should I say mud and slush!

Click here for a rather sad song, though it evokes the hard life that working boatmen had on the Cut during bad weather. The winter of 1962-3 badly affected commercial carrying on the Inland Waterways when cargo carrying boats were frozen in for 3 months. They were hardy folk - by necessity. This photo of Motorboat Friendship, now in the Waterways Museum at Ellesmere looks "pretty".

working boat Friendship

It was Jo and Rose Skinner's boat - now imagine it covered in snow, iced in and unable to move.

We should count ourselves fortunate that despite the freeze we are able to take pleasure from living on a narrowboat and have modern boats that stay warm with running water, cookers etc.

That said, we also learn careful management of our resources!
