Autumn on the cut

What a great time of the year to be cruising

There is a slight irony in the above statement - if you continue to follow our blog regularly, you will find out why! However this one deals with our cruise to King's Sutton.

The M40 criss crosses the South Oxford a number of times and is never far away between Aynho and Banbury. Fortunately it does not intrude too much and we feel that the slight drone at our chosen moorings reminds us a little of the sound of the sea in the distance!

Coles Lift bridge 183 (all lift bridges between Banbury and Aynho are open, excluding the one in Banbury, which requires a lock windlass) is immediately east of the large motorway bridge. According to Nicholson there is another Coles Lift Bridge (182) the other side of the M40. Maybe this is because they are on the same field, once owned by Farmer Cole(s)? The following lift bridge has a wonderful name - Scroobys. It reminds me of the cartoon Scooby Doo, a favourite when Craig was much younger!

The autumn colours are lovely, when the sun shines and even the threatening clouds did not fulfil their promise.

King's Sutton Church is apparently worth a visit - the splendid spire is always in the distance from the canal. The River Cherwell is between the canal and the village and it is a one and a half mile walk round from Twyford Bridge 177. The village is up on a hill and clearly visible from above King's Sutton Lock.

The bottom gate of King's Sutton Lock has taken a bashing - the plate is quite bent. Is this because inexperienced narrowboaters can't stop in time or single handers giving the gate a good shove to open it? It could be that the undertow towards  the gate when the lock is being emptied is extremely fierce. The lock has buildings on both sides, one the lock cottage and the other some sort of store house. But for a change, here is me "posing"!

As we continue on to Twyford, have a look at my "arty farty" photo of dead trees in the sunshine!
