It was goodbye to York for us all
Yesterday evening we were highly entertained by the Ghost Creeper. He took us on a walking tour of "spooky" York and told us some of the history too. Gary (his stage name) is a very good Storyteller and despite having spent the day as Dick Turpin at the Yorkshire Agricultural Show, he was still capable of spooking us! Today, before we left, Dom and I "did" the Jorvik Centre. There are lots of interactive screens and a smelly ride through Coppergate... but back in Viking times. It was a fitting finale to our visit to York.

We took Dom to the station and by 5pm we were on the move - typically it began to rain! However it was only a shower and we enjoyed an evening cruise to Naburn Lock.

A couple of barges were moored at King's Staithe - part of the York Rivers Festival.
 
With a last look back at Skeldergate Bridge, we left York; we will be back one day, I am sure. Although the water level of the River Ouse has risen quite a bit, we were reassured to see the water gauge by Millenium Bridge still reading low!

By the time we were nearing Naburn the sun was beginning to shine through the clouds and there was blue sky ahead. The cruisers were lined up along the moorings as far as we could see. Maybe we would find a mooring above Naburn Lock after all. If they were planning another Saturday gathering there, we had beaten them to it, or so we hoped.

As we approached the left turn above Naburn weir, there were some lovely reflections and, wonder of wonders, there was a space waiting for us amongst the other narrowboats already moored there.

Once moored - in exactly the same place as we were on our trip up to York (but the other way around of course!) - we realised again how high the river was. It was not a huge step up, just a small one onto the towpath. Now we are all set for a relaxing weekend.

Hi again, Fiona. The Aviva building pictured is only one of several in the city used by the UK Life operation of Aviva. After the council Aviva is probably the largest employer in the city. That building, Wellington Row, was built in the 90s for the then General Accident Life operation, I think for something like £18 million. It is quite a nice building but the company packs plenty of staff into it. The worldwide HQ of Aviva is one of the skyscrapers in the City of London.
