Yesterdays news and the latest!
We enjoyed our trip up the River Ouse to Naburn Locks.
The rail swing bridge and road swing bridges cross the river and we had to remember which arch to go through! The train bridge needed a lot of throttle to get through as John controlled Epiphany on the flood tide. The old wharf below the site of the Custom House is between the two swing bridges.

Westmills Food factory and Rank Hovis also have wharfs and beyond are the remains of other wharfs too. We soon left all this behind as the river rushed us on! The Ouse has some very large bends on the stretch between Selby and Naburn and we kept well into the middle as the tide was still rising with the mud banks all too visible!

Around Cawood there was lots of flotsam and jetsam - mainly wood, the odd tree trunk and floating islands of rubbish. We weaved our way in and out of these and then I spotted a dead cow floating. John had already seen a sheep in the mud further back. On a more happy note there were cows grazing in the fields above the banks and plenty of bird life to watch.
Cows grazing - the tide was still low!
Cawood Swing bridge was pretty impressive with the large wood buttresses jutting out from the arches. It swings from the middle with the control tower above the mechanism.

Ancaster Selby - a small hamlet peeks over the banks. There are a couple of farms and this white house that stand out against the sky.

We arrived at Naburn Locks and had to hang around whilst the Lock Keeper worked three boats down. The large weir to the left of the lock looked pretty threatening but its power was well dispersed in the river as the tide was now up.

Our "official photographer" was waiting to greet us. My thanks to Gill from Narrowboat Petroc for the following two photos. Both Gill and Geoff greeted us at the lock, as they were moored just above on the visitor moorings.

So now we are in "another world" and back on non-tidal waters. The moorings here are very pleasant and we had a wonderful evening, with Geoff and Gill providing the hospitality. Much food, booze and laughter meant a very late night!

However, this morning things were not so calm ........
