Is James May mad? PDF Print

Which James May, you ask!

He of that "petrol head" programme to do with cars! However, he is not afraid of diversification, thank goodness.

Did you see it - it was brilliant. What a mad idea. James May's Toy Stories is what I am talking about. A Meccano bridge over the Leeds and Liverpol Canal sounds a real recipe for failure. But he did it - with a little help from some equally mad students and some sensible bridge design bods.

Liverpool was where Meccano was invented and first manufactured. So it was a case of bringing the goods "home". See the article on this website - clickety click

My only beef was that he described the newest bit of canal in the country as a piece of water that had divided Liverpool for many years. Hmm - did he not look around him at the ultra modern buildings and "ancient" bricks lining the canal! OK -  some old historic buildings were opposite.

We went through in July, the Meccano bridge was built just by the Pier Head building (on right of first photo below) and opposite the Liver Building

If you haven't seen it, here is plug for the BBC iPlayer link to the programme

I am not surre how long the iPlayer programme is accessible so here are more details on click Liverpool

P.S. What a huge wasted opportunity for BW (British Waterways) to get some publicity out of it. I dont believe they were even mentioned. There was even a BW work boat in the film, on the canal - with one of the cameras aboard. Doh! (John)
