Waiting for BW on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

Written by Fiona Slee Thursday, 17 May 2012 13:45

Narrowboats wishing to go down into Liverpool via the Liverpool Link have to book a passage with BW. They open the final two swing bridges, work the narrowboats through the four Stanley Locks and the last two locks into Canning Half Tide Dock. However more of that another day.

First, we had our own date with yet more swing bridges on the main line of the Leeds and Liverpool .......

Swing bridges galore when cruising the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

It was a fine day and so we decided to move. The Lancashire swing bridges come thick and fast between Downholland Cross and Melling on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The sun was out and thank goodness the wind had dropped.

The coot family had gone out for the morning: there was no sign of them. We had more countryside ahead of us, but further south the canal touches the outskirts of Liverpool at Lydiate and Maghull and the skyline of the city can just be made out on the horizon.....

The first sod is cut on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal

Cruising south-westward towards Liverpool, the countryside is flat farmland, with views across towards the sea in the north with the Pennines behind in the east. Isolated villages cluster around the bridges. The Leeds and Liverpool Canal was "born" near Halsall, where the first sod was ceremoniously cut in November 1770 by the Honourable Charles Mordaunt of Halsall Hall.

There are pubs all along the route too - handy for thirsty boatmen -no time to stop for us though - we once again had a mooring in mind .....
